Dragonfly

Dragonfly (364 Calle Fortaleza, Old San Juan) — Dark and sexy, this popular Latin-Asian restaurant, all done up in Chinese red, feels more like a fashionable after-hours lounge than a restaurant. The romantic ambience, created partly through tightly packed tables and low lighting, is a big draw. The small plates, meant to be shared, come in generous portions. Don’t miss the calamari, fried with onions and oyster sauce and tossed with a local cilantro-like herb called recao. Tuna sushi is turned on its head and served atop a deep-fried rice cake dressed with spicy mayo and seaweed salad. Make sure to try the inventive cocktails that nicely complement the food. Reservations aren’t accepted, but we’ll let you in on a secret to save yourself a frustrating wait: you can call ahead and get yourself put on the waiting list.
