Hope Estate Archaeological Site

Hope Estate Archaeological Site (Grand Case, Saint Martin) — The remains of an Arawak village were found on this one-hectare plateau, 80 metres above sea level and overlooking the Grand Case plain.  These American Indians arrived here from South America around 550BC and established a large circular-shaped village here, which they occupied until 450AD, leaving petroglyphs and many pottery items behind as they went.  Hope Estate takes its name from an old house where sugar cane was cultivated in the 18th Century.
