La Cucina di Ivo
La Cucina di Ivo (202 Calle Cristo, Old San Juan) — A pretty courtyard just steps from the cathedral has been transformed into this traditional trattoria. The staff enters and leaves through leaded-glass doors on either side of the central courtyard that lead to the bar, the wine cellar, and intimate dining rooms. You’ll want to dine alfresco, as ceiling fans keep everything cool. A fountain bubbles on one side of the courtyard, and rows of potted fig trees surround the wrought-iron café tables. The place is named for chef Ivo Bignami, and the kitchen turns out specialties of his native Milan. For a lighter meal, or a first course big enough to share with your date, order the light, fluffy gnocchi. Entrées include a wide range of pasta and risotto dishes, plus such mouthwatering temptations as filet mignon in truffle sauce. For dessert, try the classic and tasty tiramisu.
